What is the change between Cloud, Edge and Fog Computing?
With the ever-evolving expertise landscape, it can be difficult to keep up with new terminology and features. Most people have a good grasp of "The Cloud" and what it can do, but newer terms like high-end computing or fog computing aren't as well understood, although they help drive innovation in many areas. We wanted to help define these three term and show how they are being used to power IIoT architecture.
Cloud computings
To sum it up in simpler terms, cloud computing means that
data is processed—and accessed—over the Internet, rather than on a local hard
drive or server. For businesses, cloud computing reduces cost through measured
services and the ability to scale as needed to meet demand. It also allows employees
to access documents from wherever they are, as long as they have access to the
network via the Internet. It also supports consumer applications such as mobile
banking and streaming entertainment. Some disadvantages of cloud computing
include latency and limitations on real-time processing.
Edge Computing
Edge Computing is a distributed computing model that
collects data at the edge of a network, such as on a factory floor, and
processes that data in real time. The benefits of edge computing include reduced
bandwidth usage, which saves money and avoids bottlenecks, increased security
through encryption at the source, and data performance optimization by
splitting workloads between the edge and the cloud. Edge computing addresses
the disadvantages of the cloud by reducing latency.
fog computing
Haze computing can look very similar to high-end computing
because both involve moving the processing closer to where the data is
collected. But in fog computing, data is transmitted from the collection point
to a gateway for processing and then sent back to the edge for action. Fog
computing uses high-end devices and gateways with a LAN for processing.
Combining the ability to run applications on the edge together with the power
of the cloud, fog computing acts as a bridge, bringing the cloud and the edge
together.
How Cloud, Edge, and Mist Work Together
Enterprises have options on how to implement cloud, edge,
and fog technologies to best meet their needs. To find out which technology is
best suited for the task, workloads should be categorized into categories such
as monitoring, analysis, and execution. Once defined, it will dictate the best
network structure. It's all about getting the right data in the right place at
the right time.
